Myth: ivy is strangling your hedge. Three things Thanet homeowners get wrong about Hedera helix.
The call comes in every February, from Cliftonville, Westgate-on-Sea, Ramsgate: someone has found ivy threading through their escallonia or griselinia and wants it stripped out before the growing season starts. The request makes complete sense if ivy kills hedges. It does not. Here are the three things that get confused, and what the plant is actually doing.
Myth 1: “Ivy is a parasite that feeds off my hedge and is killing it.”
Fact: ivy (Hedera helix) is not a parasite. Its aerial rootlets take nothing from the host plant.
The aerial rootlets that ivy uses to climb are adhesion organs, not feeding roots. They grip textured surfaces (bark, mortar, stone, fence panels) using a combination of mechanical friction and a small adhesive secretion. They do not penetrate bark or extract water or nutrients from whatever they cling to. Ivy obtains all its water and minerals from the soil through conventional ground-level roots, the same as any other shrub growing beside your hedge.
What this means in practice: an established, vigorous hedge is not being drained by ivy growing through it. The hedge and the ivy are competing for root-zone resources (soil water, minerals) in the way any two neighbouring plants compete, but there is no parasitic extraction happening at the contact points between ivy stems and hedge stems. A healthy escallonia in Cliftonville CT9, a well-maintained griselinia in Westgate-on-Sea CT8, a mature beech hedge in Broadstairs CT10: none of these are being harmed by ivy using them as a climbing frame. The Royal Horticultural Society's guidance on ivy states that ivy does not directly harm healthy trees or shrubs. This is the mainstream horticultural position, backed by decades of observation and confirmed by multiple UK sources including the RHS and the Wildlife Trusts.
The confusion arises because ivy uses living plants as physical support, which reads visually as dependency. The support is structural only. A healthy hedge is not being extracted.
Myth 2: “Ivy at the base of my hedge means the hedge is failing.”
Fact: ivy colonises bare soil where light reaches the ground. It is an indicator that the base is open, not the cause of it.
Ivy is a shade-tolerant, low-growing plant that thrives in sheltered spots with reasonable soil moisture and available light. In a garden hedge context, it appears at the base when the hedge has a sparse or bare lower section where light can reach ground level and soil is accessible for roots.
The important question is why the base is sparse. On Thanet hedges the most common cause by some margin is a cutting-profile mistake: trimming the hedge with vertical sides progressively shades out the lower growth over several seasons, until the base becomes a bare stem column with a dense green shelf at the top. The ivy is colonising a space that the hedge has already vacated, not displacing growth that would otherwise be there.
Blaming the ivy and removing it without addressing the cutting angle changes nothing structurally: next season the ivy returns (its root system is unaffected by cutting the surface stems), the base is still bare, and the hedge still looks thin at the bottom. The sparse base on a Ramsgate CT12 or Margate CT9 privet or escallonia hedge is a cutting-profile problem. Correct the profile over two or three seasons and the base will fill in. The ivy at the base can be managed back at the same time, but it is not the cause of the problem.
On Thanet chalk there is a secondary point worth noting. Thanet's Margate Chalk Member and Thanet Sand geology drains quickly, and the root zone dries out faster than on the heavier clay soils further west in Kent. Ivy at the base covering the soil is, in that context, reducing surface moisture loss during the dry June-to-August window that stresses newly established and weakly rooted Thanet hedges most. Replacing bare chalk-grit soil with an ivy mat is not neutral: it slightly improves moisture conditions in the immediate root zone. This is not a reason to encourage unchecked ivy, but it is a reason not to strip every last scrap from the base of an otherwise healthy hedge and leave exposed chalk rubble behind.
Myth 3: “All ivy growing in or near a hedge needs removing to keep the hedge healthy.”
Fact: well-managed ivy is one of the most ecologically valuable plants in a Thanet garden. Removing it carelessly during nesting season is also a criminal offence.
Hedera helix provides three distinct ecological services that are particularly significant in Thanet's coastal gardens:
- Late-season nectar and pollen. Ivy flowers September through November, long after most other flowering plants have finished. It is one of the last significant nectar sources before winter for bumblebees, honeybees, hoverflies (including drone flies that overwinter as adults) and some late-flying butterflies. On the Thanet coast, where the salt wind compresses the growing season even while temperatures stay relatively mild, this late-season resource matters more than it does in sheltered inland gardens.
- Winter berry crop. Ivy berries ripen January to April, the lean months after other berry crops are exhausted. Fieldfares and redwings (winter thrushes arriving on passage through the Thanet coast from October) feed on them. Resident blackbirds, woodpigeons and robins in Cliftonville, Birchington CT7 and Minster rely on them through February and March. On the Isle of Thanet in a hard February with frozen ground, ivy berries are among the few substantial food sources remaining for wintering garden birds.
- Nesting and roosting cover. Dense, mature ivy growing on walls, fences and through established hedges is prime nesting substrate for wrens, dunnocks, robins and blackbirds. Wrens in particular nest early (late March through May) and use ivy mats on sheltered south-facing walls and in the body of established hedges. The same ivy that provides winter berries through February will be active nesting habitat by the end of March.
That third point has direct legal consequences.
Ivy removal and the nesting window: the WCA 1981 position
Under section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is a criminal offence to intentionally kill, injure or take a wild bird, or to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built. The main nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. Penalty on conviction: up to £5,000 per offence.
Ivy growing on or through a hedge, on a wall or on a fence is commonly used as nesting substrate from late March through July by wrens, robins, dunnocks and blackbirds. Stripping ivy off a hedge or pulling it off a fence during those months, without first conducting a competent visual nest check, risks disturbing or destroying an active nest.
The WCA offence does not require you to have known the nest was there. If you pull ivy off a wall in April and expose a wren nest in the process, the act was done intentionally and the offence is complete. The safe default is to treat ivy removal exactly as you would hedge cutting: September to late February as the standard working window; inside the window, a careful visual check first. Walk the ivy surface slowly, look into any cavities, listen for repeated adult bird traffic to one point, watch for droppings or nest material. If any of that is present, stop and come back in September. What to actually do
The practical approach depends on what the ivy is doing and what the hedge needs.
Young hedges (planted in the last two or three years): remove ivy from the immediate root zone and from any stems that are beginning to climb up and shade the young hedge. Ivy competing with a newly planted escallonia or griselinia on Thanet chalk during its first dry summer can tip a marginal establishment into failure, particularly if the two plants are competing for the same limited water in fast-draining Thanet Sand topsoil. Cut the ivy stem at soil level. Do not pull the stems off the young hedge: they may be tangled through new growth and pulling can snap branches or strip bark. Cut the stem, wait six to eight weeks for the aerial portions to dry out, and they will loosen without effort.
Established hedges (three years or more, well-rooted): assess, then decide. Ivy at the base below knee height, covering a metre or two of bare stem, is not causing harm and in most cases can be left, particularly on fast-draining Thanet chalk where some soil cover at the base is beneficial. Ivy climbing significantly into the upper canopy of the hedge and beginning to dominate the upper growth: cut the main stem at soil level in September, outside the nesting window, and leave the upper portions to die back over winter. Do not attempt to pull vigorous climbing ivy off an established hedge in a single session: on a long-established griselinia or escallonia the stems are often wound through the hedge structure and the mechanical force required can damage the hedge far more than the ivy would have done.
Ivy on walls and fences near hedges: the same principles apply. Routine management in September through to late February. Any work inside the nesting window (1 March to 31 August) requires a careful visual check before starting, with time taken to look into cavities and listen for the alarm behaviour that indicates adults attending a nest nearby.
Conservation areas in Thanet: Ivy removal from walls and fences within the Isle of Thanet's conservation areas (Margate Old Town, the eight Cliftonville CAs, Ramsgate town centre CA, Broadstairs Old Town CA, the three Westgate-on-Sea CAs, Birchington Square CA, Minster core CA) does not normally require a s.211 notification under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, since the notification applies to works on trees, not plant-matter removal from surfaces. However, if the wall itself has listed-building status or is within the curtilage of a listed building, the ecological survey obligations attached to any associated works still apply, and disturbing nesting birds during the removal is a WCA 1981 offence regardless of planning status.
